David Luan, Vice President of Amazon's AGI Lab, has departed the company, raising questions about the future of Amazon's internal artificial general intelligence research efforts. Luan previously co-founded Adept AI, a startup that raised $415 million in venture funding to build AI systems capable of taking actions on computers on behalf of users.
Adept was acquired by Amazon in 2024 in a deal structured to bring Luan and his team into Amazon to lead its AGI research ambitions, following a pattern of acqui-hires that saw major tech companies absorb AI startups. Under Luan's leadership, Amazon's AGI Lab was tasked with developing AI systems that could eventually match or exceed human-level intelligence across a broad range of tasks.
His departure after approximately a year at Amazon suggests potential friction between the startup-speed research culture Luan cultivated at Adept and Amazon's more structured corporate environment. Before founding Adept, Luan held positions at OpenAI and Google, giving him a comprehensive view of the AI landscape. His exit leaves Amazon without a key AI research leader at a time when the company is investing billions in AI through both internal development and its partnership with Anthropic.
