Key Qwen Researcher Binyuan Hui Leaves Alibaba

Last updated: Mar 2, 2026

Binyuan Hui, a Science Researcher on Alibaba's Qwen team, has departed the company as part of an accelerating brain drain from China's most prominent open-source AI model effort. Hui was a key contributor to the Qwen model family, Alibaba's flagship open-source large language model that has rapidly climbed benchmark rankings to compete with Meta's Llama.

His work was particularly focused on improving Qwen's performance in coding and mathematical reasoning — two of the most challenging and commercially valuable capability dimensions for language models. Hui's contributions helped Qwen achieve competitive scores on benchmarks like HumanEval and GSM8K, demonstrating that Chinese AI labs could produce models rivaling those from Western counterparts.

His departure is part of what industry observers have called the 'Qwen brain drain,' a concerning trend for Alibaba as several of the researchers most responsible for the model's rapid improvement have left in recent months. The talent losses come at a critical time as Alibaba faces intensifying competition from other Chinese AI labs including ByteDance, Baidu, and DeepSeek.
